Korean holdings firm invests $200 million in US' Roivant

SK Holdings on Monday announced an investment of $200 million in US’ Roivant Sciences for its targeted protein degradation technology as part of its bioscience business strategy.
SK홀딩스는 미국 로이반트사이언스(Royvant Sciences)에 바이오사이언스 사업 전략의 일환으로 목표 단백질 분해 기술에 2억 달러를 투자했다고 21일 밝혔다.
An emerging(최근에 사용하는) concept in medicine, drugs using targeted protein degradation seek to degrade or destroy malicious proteins altogether, unlike drugs of the past, which have sought to inhibit(억제하다) their activity. 
목표가 된 단백질 분해법을 사용하는 의약의 새로운 개념들은 그들의 활동을 억제하려고 했던 과거의 약들과는 달리, 악의적인 단백질을 완전히 약화시키거나 파괴하는 것을 추구한다
This new approach delivers better efficacy and less development of drug tolerance, according to scientists.
과학자들에 따르면, 이 새로운 접근법은 더 나은 효능과  약물 내성을 줄인 개발을 제공한다
“We believe that AI-powered(주도하는) targeted protein degradation will not only improve inefficiencies in the pharmaceutical industry, but also generate significant social impact by tackling unmet(충족되지 않은) medical needs,” said Jang Dong-hyun, CEO of SK Holdings.
장동현 SK홀딩스 대표는 "AI가 주도하는 표적 단백질 분해는 제약업계의 비효율성을 개선할 뿐 아니라 충족되지 않은 의료수요를 타개함으로서  의미가 있는 사회적 파급효과가 형성될 것이라고 말했다.
Including Roivant, the holding company of Korea‘s third-biggest conglomerate, has invested roughly 251 billion won in bioscience companies over the past two years. The $200 million, or 220 billion won, to be invested in Roivant is by far the biggest commitment SK Holdings has made to a single bioventure.
로이반트를 포함하여  한국 3위의 재벌인 홀딩 회사는 지난 2년 동안 약 2,510억 원을 바이오 과학 기업에 투자했다. 로이반트에 투입될 2억달러(2200억원)는 SK홀딩스가 단일 바이오벤처에 수행한 가장 큰 금액이다.
Broken down chronologically(연대적으로), SK Holdings has invested 4.5 billion won in GenEdit and 3.4 billion won in LVIS in 2018, both firms in the US. In 2019, the holdings firm invested 6 billion won in China’s Harbour BioMed, 9.4 billion won in Korea’s Standigm and 4.4 billion won in France’s Visible Patient. In 2020, SK Holdings invested 7.2 billion won in systems biology antibody researcher Hummingbird(벌새) Bioscience in Singapore.
시간적으로 보면 SK홀딩스는 2018년 미국 양사 모두 젠에디트에 45억원, LVIS에 34억원을 투자했다. 이 지주회사는 2019년 중국 하버바이오메드에 60억원, 한국 스탠다임에는 94억원, 프랑스 비주얼 페이션스에는 44억원을 투자했다. SK홀딩스는 2020년 싱가포르에 시스템생물항체 연구원 휴민버어드바이오사이언스에 72억원을 투자했다.
In entirety, from 2018 to end-2020, SK Holdings allotted an accumulated 34.9 billion won to biotechs other than Roivant. These investments also targeted gamechangers, like CRISPR gene editing technology and artificial intelligence-driven novel drug research, but the size of the investment in Roivant has pushed the rest out of the limelight.(조명 관심)
SK홀딩스는 2018년부터 2020년 말까지 모두 349억원을 로이반트 이외의 바이오테크에 배정했다. 이들 투자는 크리스퍼 유전자 편집기술, 인공지능(AI) 중심의 참신한 마약 연구 등 게임체인저도 대상으로 삼았지만 로이반트 투자의 규모가 나머지 투자자들을 관심 밖으로 밀어냈다.
Roivant has received an attention from SK Holdings on par with(~의 수준으로) that given to the company’s consolidated global CMO SK Pharmteco, or the initial public offering of SK Biopharmaceuticals.
로이 반트는 SK 그룹 통합 글로벌 CMO 인 SK 팜 테코  또는 SK 바이오 팜의 기업 공개에 기울였던 동등한 수준의 관심을 받았다
In creating SK Pharmteco, SK Holdings has acquired its own subsidiary SK Biotek for 40 billion won; BMS’ Irish CMO for an industry-speculated 170 billion won; and US company AMPAC for another industry-speculated 800 billion won -- amounting to 1.01 trillion won in total.
SK제약을 설립하면서 SK홀딩스는 자회사인 SK바이오텍을 400억원에, BMS의 아일랜드 CMO는 업계추산으로 1700억원에, 미국기업인 AMPAC 다른 업계평가로 8000억원 총  1조1천1백억원에 각각 인수했다.
SK Biopharmaceuticals, an SK Holdings subsidiary specializing in treatments for the central nervous system, is valued at 13.8 trillion won after making successful entry on the Kospi stock market this year.
중앙신경계 치료제 전문 SK홀딩스 계열사인 SK바이오제약은 올해 코스피시장에 성공적으로 진입한 뒤 13조8000억원의 가치가 평가되고 있다.
Professor Craig Crews of Yale University first identified the notion of targeted protein degradation in 2001, and has proven the in vivo (체내에서)efficacy of the technology for the first time in animals in 2015 and in humans in 2020. Crews founded Arvinas in 2013, which has five pipelines and was valued at $1 billion as of Dec. 1.
크레이그 크루스 예일대 교수는 2001년 표적 단백질 분해 개념을 처음 규명했고 2015년 동물에서, 2020년 인간에서 처음으로 이 기술의 생체내 효능을 입증했다. 크루즈는 2013년에 Arvinas를 설립했는데, 이 회사는 5개의 파이프라인을 가지고 있으며 12월 1일 현재 10억 달러의 가치가 평가되었다.
Other firms involved in the targeted protein degradation technology include Nurix, Kymera and C4.
표적 단백질 분해 기술에 관련된 다른 회사로는 누릭스, 키메라, C4 등이 있다.
As for Roivant, the company was founded in 2014 by Vivek Ramaswamy, whose background(배경) is in fund managing for biopharmaecuticals in New York. In its researches, Roivant applies artificial intelligence and data-driven systems biology to dramatically shorten the time and cost needed for novel drug development.
로이반트에 대해서는 2014년 비벡 라마스와미가 설립했는데, 비벡 라마스와미는 뉴욕에서 바이오파메틱을 위한 펀드 운용 경험이 있다. 로이반트는 이번 연구에서 인공지능과 데이터 기반 시스템 생물학을 적용해 새로운 약물 개발에 필요한 시간과 비용을 획기적으로 단축하는데 적용했다 .
Roivant has six degrader pipelines, designed using the company’s proprietary technology VantAI.
Roivant는 6개의 디그레이더 파이프라인을 보유하고 있으며, 이 회사의 독점 기술인 Vant AI.를 사용하도록 설계되었다.
VantAI is a deep learning-based computational program that addresses(설명하다:해결하다) modality-specific challenges(문제) of designing and optimizing novel degrader candidates. It does in-silico drug design, target prediction, interactome(상호작용) mapping(정보를 발견하다) and ADMET optimization. ADMET is short for absorption, distribution, metabolism(신진대사), excretion(배설) and toxicity.(독성)

VantAI는 새로운 디그레이드 후보를 설계하고 최적화하는 양식별 문제를 해결하는 딥 러닝 기반 컴퓨팅 프로그램입니다. 실리코내 약물 설계, 표적 예측, 상호 작용체 정보발견 및 ADMET 최적화를 수행합니다. ADMET는 흡수, 분포, 신진 대사, 배설 및 독성의 약자입니다.
Acknowledged for its innovative technologies, Roivant won $1.1 billion investment from Softbank’s Vision Fund in 2017 -- an amount formerly unseen for a single bioventure.
혁신 기술을 인정받은 로이반트는 2017년 소프트뱅크 비전 펀드로부터 한 번의 바이오 벤처로는 볼 수 없었던 금액인 11억 달러의 투자를 받았다
By forming(형성하다) a strategic alliance with Roivant, SK Holdings said it seeks to take on (취득하다)a leading position in the targeted protein degradation pursuits, and create a synergy with SK Biopharmaceuticals and SK Pharmteco in the long run.
SK홀딩스는 로이반트와 전략적 제휴를 맺음으로써 표적 단백질 분해 추구에서 선도적 위치를 점하고, 장기적으로는 SK바이오제약, SK제약과 시너지를 창출하는 방안을 모색하고 있다고 밝혔다.
SK Holdings CEO Jang said, “In addition to this partnership, we look forward to working together to innovate on other aspects of health care with a long-term vision.”
